About

Sony Music Entertainment (SME), commonly called Sony Music, is the recording division of Sony Music Group and is owned by Sony Group Corporation. It began in 1929 as the American Record Corporation, became Columbia Recording Corporation in 1938 and CBS Records in 1966. Sony bought it in 1988 and renamed it SME in 1991. From 2004 to 2008 its operations were part of the Sony BMG joint venture with Bertelsmann.[1] Its labels include Epic Records.[2] Its LEI record gives the legal jurisdiction as Delaware, United States, with registration number 3824209.[3] On the European CD edition of Evanescence's Fallen it is credited, as Sony Music Entertainment Inc., as record company and trademark owner.[4]
