Sony Classical is Sony's classical, crossover and soundtrack record label. It began in 1924 as Columbia Masterworks Records, a Columbia Records subsidiary, was renamed CBS Masterworks in 1980 and, after Sony acquired the CBS Records Group in 1988, became Sony Classical in 1990.[1] Discogs gives its label code as LC 06868 and notes that it is operated by Sony Music Masterworks in the US and by Sony Classical in Berlin elsewhere.[2] It is one of the flagship labels of Sony Music Entertainment.[3] Its artists include Yo-Yo Ma, whose Vivaldi's Cello it released in 2004.[4]
