About Sony Group Corporation

Sony Group Corporation is the Japanese conglomerate at the head of the Sony group, with its headquarters in Minato, Tokyo, and businesses spanning video games, music, film and television, consumer electronics, imaging and sensing and semiconductors.^[1] It sits at the top of the group: its Form 20-F for the year ended 31 March 2026 states that, to its knowledge, it is not directly or indirectly owned or controlled by any other corporation, by any foreign government or by any other natural or legal person, severally or jointly, and the same report sets out the significant subsidiaries it owns directly or indirectly.^[2] Its common stock trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and its American Depositary Shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SONY.^[2]

GLEIF carries a reporting exception for both the direct and the ultimate parent of the entity, each with the category accounting consolidation parent and the reason "no known person", which is the register's way of recording that no parent consolidates it.^[3][4] The Form 20-F adds that there are no arrangements which may at a later date result in a change of control, and that major shareholders hold no voting rights different from those of other shareholders; as of 31 March 2026 there were 6,149,810,645 shares of common stock outstanding, including 242,144,891 shares of treasury stock, of which 523,381,332 shares were in the form of ADRs, each American Depositary Share representing one share of common stock.^[2]

It was founded in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita, adopted the name Sony Corporation in 1958, and took its present name in 2021 as part of a move to a holding-company structure, the electronics business continuing under the name Sony Corporation.^[1] GLEIF gives the legal entity's creation date as 7 May 1946, recorded as 1946-05-06T15:00Z, which is midnight in Japan.^[5] It was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in December 1958, issued American Depositary Receipts in the United States in June 1961 and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in September 1970.^[2] Its Form 20-F for the year ended 31 March 2026 lists Sony Music Entertainment, U.S.A., among the significant subsidiaries owned, directly or indirectly, at 100.0 per cent, and records that the board resolved on 14 May 2025 to spin off part of its wholly owned subsidiary Sony Financial Group Inc. as of 1 October 2025, after which that company, which operates the financial services business, was excluded from consolidation.^[2] Its official site is sony.com.^[7]
