Sony Music Entertainment UK Holdings Limited is the London holding company through which the Sony group holds its British record company. It was registered in England on 12 April 1996 under number 03185450, gives "activities of head offices" as its declared business and has its registered office at 2 Canal Reach, London N1C 4DB; it is active and its last accounts were made up to 31 March 2025.^[1] Companies House names Sony Group Corporation of Tokyo, registration number 5010401067252, as its sole active person with significant control, notified on 6 April 2016, with 75 per cent or more of the shares and of the voting rights and the right to appoint or remove directors.^[2] It holds Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited, registered number 01471066, on the same three counts.^[3]

The company has carried four earlier names, each of them on the register: incorporated as Burginhall 889 Limited on 12 April 1996, it became BMG UK Limited on 28 August 1997, BMG Europe Ltd. on 4 February 2002 and Sony BMG Music Entertainment (UK Holdings) Limited on 12 June 2006, and took its present name on 2 January 2009.^[1] The record company below it dropped the Sony BMG name for Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited on that same day.^[4] Those names follow the wider business: Sony combined its recorded-music operations outside Japan with those of Bertelsmann AG in August 2004 to form the 50-50 joint venture SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, acquired Bertelsmann's 50 per cent interest in October 2008 and renamed the joint-venture company Sony Music Entertainment in January 2009.^[5]
