Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., known as Sony Music Japan or SMEJ, is a Tokyo entertainment company wholly owned by Sony Group Corporation, with operations in record labels, music publishing, anime production and events.[1] It was incorporated in March 1968 as CBS/Sony Records, a 50/50 joint venture of Sony and CBS, was renamed CBS/Sony Group in 1983, and became wholly Sony's when Sony acquired the CBS Records Group and the other half of the company in January 1988, after which it took its present name.[1] It works independently of the US-based Sony Music Entertainment, and its subsidiaries include Sony Music Labels and Aniplex.[1]
Its group company Sony Music Japan International made and distributed the Japanese CD of Evanescence's Fallen, EICP-253, whose JAN begins with 4547366, a block that MusicBrainz fills with releases on Sony Music Japan group labels.[2][3]
