About Sony Computer Entertainment
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) was the Sony company that created and ran the PlayStation business. Sony and its subsidiary Sony Music Entertainment Japan jointly established it in 1993 to handle the group's ventures into video games, and it released the first PlayStation in Japan on 3 December 1994.[1] Its North American and European operations, Sony Computer Entertainment America and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, were re-established as its wholly owned subsidiaries at the beginning of 1997.[1] A PlayStation 3 licensed publisher agreement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission names it as the American company's parent and as the designer of the console's core technology.[2] Sony's games and network businesses were reorganised as Sony Interactive Entertainment on 1 April 2016, and the company behind PlayStation today says of itself that it launched in 1993 as Sony Computer Entertainment.[3]
SCEI formed SCE Worldwide Studios on 1 September 2005 to oversee all of its wholly owned development studios.[1] On 1 April 2010 its Japanese division was temporarily renamed SNE Platform Inc. and split into a console business, which kept the name Sony Computer Entertainment, and a network service business; the same year Sony established Sony Network Entertainment International in California for PlayStation Network and the PlayStation Store.[1] On 23 August 2010 the headquarters moved from Minami-Aoyama to Sony City, the Sony headquarters in Kōnan, Minato, Tokyo.[1] Unlike the former company, Sony Interactive Entertainment is headquartered in San Mateo, California, and oversees the whole PlayStation brand, the regional subsidiaries and the content business.[1]
