About this product

Poppets Toffee is a 39 g cardboard carton of chewy toffee balls coated in milk chocolate, sold in the United Kingdom under the Poppets brand and made by Valeo Confectionery.[4] The carton front carries the PAYNES signature above the Poppets wordmark and the line "chewy toffee covered in milk chocolate", and the pack is opened through a tear-out hatch in one corner rather than a wrapper, the format the brand has kept since the 1930s.[5] The back names a UK consumer-services address at WF8 9BT and the Valeo Foods Group in Dublin.[6] The barcode is a GTIN-8, 50314904, printed by UK, Swedish and US sellers alike.[7][8][9]

Poppets were introduced in 1937 by George Payne & Co of Croydon, as a dragée with only a raisin centre; toffee, mint and orange followed, and by 2011 about ten million were eaten each week.[5] Payne's was bought by Northern Foods in 1998, the Croydon Road factory closed in 2001 and production moved to Leicester and, from 2020, to York; the brand now belongs to Valeo Confectionery Limited of Norwich, registered since 1986 and formerly Tangerine Confectionery Limited.[5][10] The carton's recipe was reformulated between 2022 and 2025: the older list opened with sugar and glucose syrup and declared the pack as "milk chocolate (37%) with toffee centres", while the current one opens with the milk chocolate itself and adds polydextrose, gum arabic and dextrinised tapioca starch.[6][11]
