Trebor Softmints Spearmint is a 44.9 g roll of mint flavoured chewy centred sweets in a crisp candy coating, sold in the United Kingdom and Ireland under the Trebor mint brand that Mondelez International owns.[3] The roll carries the EAN-8 barcode 50105083, a suitable-for-vegetarians roundel and a choking warning, and names Mondelez UK in Birmingham and Mondelez Ireland in Dublin as the companies to contact.[1] Mondelez International's own United Kingdom page says its Sheffield factory, founded in 1842, makes Trebor mints, and Bestway Wholesale gives the country of origin as the United Kingdom.[4][5] Bestway prices the roll at a recommended 79p and sells it to shops in cases of forty.[5]
Trebor was founded on 4 January 1907 in Forest Gate, east London, by four partners including Robert Robertson, whose first name reversed gave the firm its name; Cadbury Schweppes bought it in 1989 for GBP 147 million, it traded as the Trebor Bassett division from 1990, and it passed to Mondelez International with the rest of Cadbury.[3] Softmints reached a wider audience in 1987, when Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel's "Mr. Soft" was used in its television advertising and re-released as a single to coincide with the spring 1988 campaign.[3] The old Barcodepedia held this barcode from at least January 2009 as "Trebor Spearmint Softmints" and attributed it to Sanmex International PLC, a line that site generated from the number rather than reading from the pack.[6]
