Natural mint flavouring

Natural mint flavouring is a natural flavouring named after mint, the source material it is drawn from. Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008 allows the word natural to be used of a flavouring only where the flavouring component consists solely of flavouring preparations and natural flavouring substances, and it fixes the wording of a source-named description as 'natural "food(s) or food category or source(s)" flavouring'.^[1] British mint confectionery prints it plainly: the Trebor Softmints Spearmint roll closes its list with "natural mint flavouring, glazing agent (carnauba wax)", the flavouring standing fourth after sugar, glucose syrup and modified starch.^[2]

Natural describes how the flavouring was obtained rather than the whole of what it was obtained from: where a source is named, the flavouring component must have been obtained exclusively, or by at least 95 % by weight, from that source material.^[1] A natural flavouring substance is one obtained by physical, enzymatic or microbiological processes from material of vegetable, animal or microbiological origin, so this page, like its parent, leaves vegan and vegetarian status uncertain rather than asserting either.^[3] Naming mint rather than a species leaves the botanical source open: spearmint and peppermint packs in one range can carry the same wording.^[2] The term declares no allergen of its own.
