About this product

Kavli BaconOst is a spreadable processed cheese sold in Norway in a 175 g aluminium tube, one of the country's standard sandwich toppings, built on Norwegian hvitost with bacon, emulsifying salts and preservatives and declared naturally lactose-free.[1][2] The tube itself prints the maker: "Produsert av: O. Kavli AS, Bergen, Norge", beside the oval EFTA identification mark NO M 902, which is what establishes both the manufacturer and the Norwegian origin without relying on a trade database.[3] The same panel on the tube carries an unusual line for a food pack, that the profit goes to Kavlifondet, the charitable foundation that owns the whole group and has distributed more than 1.4 billion kroner to research, culture and humanitarian work since 1962.[3][4][5]

The point of this review is that four sources describe this one barcode differently, and the previous version could only say so in a note. They are now four observations, each with its own ingredient list and its own panel: the label photographed in 2018 and again in 2021; the Norwegian trade database, whose own page shows it has not been updated since January 2018; Kavli's current product page, the only source that declares nisin as a second preservative; and a Norwegian export shop's English listing, whose percentages match nothing else. Which of them describes the tube on a Norwegian shelf today cannot be settled from any dated source, so the disagreement is recorded rather than resolved.[1][6][2][7]

Two smaller corrections. The brand owner now points at Kavli Holding AS, the group parent that the brand entity itself names, with O. Kavli AS kept as the company that makes the tube and answers for it. And Open Food Facts' typed energy for this barcode, 901 kJ with 222 kcal, is internally inconsistent and matches no sourced panel, so it is recorded as a gap rather than used.[8] The business behind the tube goes back to 1893 in Bergen, and to Primula in 1924, described as the world's first long-keeping spreadable cheese, the technique this product still rests on.[5][9] The E numbers for the named additives come from the UK Food Standards Agency list, since the Norwegian pack prints the additive names only.[10]
