About Bright Food

Bright Food (Group) Co., Ltd. is the Shanghai food and beverage group that farms, manufactures and distributes much of the city's food, under brands that include Bright, White Rabbit, Guan Sheng Yuan, Maling and Zhengguanghe; it reported total revenue of 123.255 billion yuan for 2025 and controls five listed Chinese companies β€” Bright Dairy & Food, Bright Meat, Bright Real Estate, Jinfeng Wine and Kaichuang Marine β€” as well as Synlait Milk in New Zealand.[1] It is state-owned: the Shanghai Municipal State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission is its controlling shareholder and actual controller, holding 99.569 % of it directly and through three city holding companies.[2] On this site it is the former parent of Weetabix Limited.[3]

The legal entity dates from 26 May 1995, when Shanghai Agriculture, Industry and Commerce (Group) General Corporation was approved with 1.5658 billion yuan of capital; it moved to Huashan Road in 1998, became a limited company as Shanghai Agriculture, Industry and Commerce (Group) Co., Ltd. in May 2004, and on 7 August 2006 completed the reorganisation ordered by the state-asset commission, which brought in the Shanghai Sugar, Tobacco and Alcohol Group and the Yiming No. 1 Food Factory group β€” the holder of the Bright brand β€” and renamed it Bright Food (Group) Co., Ltd.[2] The lineage behind that entity runs back to the farms reclaimed on the Fengxian shore and on Chongming from 1954 and to the Shanghai Agricultural Reclamation Administration of 1963.[4] The company is registered at No. 7, Lane 263, Huashan Road and works from No. 20 Baoqing Road in Shanghai, with paid-in capital of 5,007,548,231 yuan and the unified social credit code 913100001322382488.[2][1]

Five holders subscribe that capital: Shanghai Guosheng (Group) with 42.6538 %, Shanghai Municipal Investment (Group) with 39.1719 %, Shanghai Jiushi (Group) with 14.8718 %, the state-asset commission with 2.8715 % and the Shanghai Municipal Finance Bureau with 0.4310 %. The commission is the sole state shareholder of the three group companies, which is how its holding reaches 99.569 %.[2] The group's own shareholder page names three of them β€” the commission, Shanghai Municipal Investment and Shanghai Guosheng β€” and describes Shanghai Municipal Investment as wholly owned by the commission and Shanghai Guosheng as a state-funded investment holding and capital operating company approved by the municipal government.[5] Wikipedia instead calls the company wholly owned by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government through Shanghai Municipal Investment Group and one sister company.[4]

The group took a 60 % controlling stake in the British cereal maker Weetabix Limited on 3 May 2012, in a deal that valued that company at Β£1.2 billion; Baring Private Equity Asia bought the remaining 40 % from Lion Capital in 2015, and Bright Food sold the business to Post Holdings in July 2017.[3] Its own presentation of the group is built around two core businesses, the food industry and supply chain and the city's food security services.[6]
