The GDSN label transcription USDA publishes for this GTIN, record modified 2018-01-11 and versioned 2021-03-19. It lists Modified Food Starch, which neither the current listing nor the maker's SmartLabel record carries; the date the recipe changed is not known, so valid_from and valid_until are left empty and the ingredient rows carry the USDA version date as `until`.

Open Food Facts republishes the same GDSN record with slightly different rounding (43.89 kcal and 11.89 g sugars per 100 ml); it is the same line of evidence, not corroboration. The figures agree with the printed serving column: 43 g sugars and 65 mg sodium per 360 ml are 11.94 g and 18 mg per 100 ml.

The wording with its punctuation is the structured Ingredients field of the Amazon listing for this UPC, reproduced in label capitals, not a shop's prose. PepsiCo's own SmartLabel record for this UPC, revision 0005 updated 2025-02-14, lists the same eight ingredients in the same order as separate fields without the label punctuation, so the maker confirms the statement. No label photograph of this bottle was found, so the exact printed punctuation is still unverified.

About this product

Mug Root Beer in the two-litre bottle, 67.6 fl oz, is the large-format pack of PepsiCo's caffeine-free root beer in the United States, catalogued by PepsiCo itself as SKU 3172, eight bottles to the case.[1] The pack is distributed by PepsiCo, Inc. of Purchase, New York.[2] Its current statement declares carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, sodium benzoate, citric acid, natural and artificial flavor, calcium disodium EDTA and quillaia extract, the last a foaming agent from the bark of the Chilean soap bark tree; an earlier revision also listed modified food starch.[3][4] PepsiCo gives the serving as 12 fl oz (360 ml), about six per container, and publishes the full Nutrition Facts column for this UPC on SmartLabel.[5] The barcode has named this article since at least 2007.[6]

More about this product

The drink was first sold in San Francisco in 1940 as Belfast Root Beer by the Belfast Beverage Company, a maker of sparkling water and ginger ale since 1877 that New Century Beverage Company had bought around 1925. Through the 1950s it was Belfast Old Fashioned Mug Root Beer before the name shortened to Mug Root Beer. PepsiCo bought the brand in 1986, replacing its own On-Tap Draft Style Root Beer, and the label has carried a bulldog named Dog holding a glass of root beer ever since.[7]

Listing observed

PepsiCo's own US B2B catalogue lists this GTIN as "Mug Root Beer 2L Plastic Bottle, 8 Per Case", SKU 3172, priced in USD; the shelf price is behind a trade login, so none is recorded. Amazon.com sells the same UPC as ASIN B000R9COWG. US grocery chains that list the barcode refuse server-side retrieval.

A listing is evidence that this barcode is sold there, on that date; a price is what that listing showed, not a recommended price.

Coverage & research gaps (8)

Coverage measures the evidence recorded here. It does not rate the product.

  • Identity: 3 / 3 · Name, brand and classification recorded
  • Context: 2 / 2 · Evidence groups assigned to a researched label, edition or analysis
  • Label photographs: 0 / 2 · Researched contexts with an assigned photograph
  • US label, current: nutrient evidence: 17 / 17 · Recorded nutrient rows linked to a source; not the number of nutrients that ought to exist
  • US label, earlier revision: nutrient evidence: 8 / 8 · Recorded nutrient rows linked to a source; not the number of nutrients that ought to exist
  • ingredients · unknown: Two ingredient statements are recorded and the date the recipe changed is not known: Modified Food Starch appears in the USDA GDSN transcription (record modified 2018-01-11) and in neither the current Amazon listing nor PepsiCo's SmartLabel record updated 2025-02-14.
  • evidence · unknown: No photograph of this pack was found, so neither the ingredient statement nor the Nutrition Facts column has been read from the bottle itself; both come from the maker's SmartLabel record and a retailer listing for the same UPC.
  • identity · unknown: No source states a country of origin. US Mug Root Beer is filled by independent bottlers under New Century Beverage Company, so no country_of_origin is recorded.
  • markets · not_researched: No dated retail price: PepsiCo Partners requires a trade login and Giant Eagle, Weis, Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Giant Food, Haggen, Kroger and Acme all blocked or timed out on server-side retrieval.
  • relationships · disputed: GS1 publishes no licensee for prefix 012000. company/pepsi-cola-north-america states the prefix, so gs1_prefix_owner targets that stub as the rules require, but the stub's own page says it derived the prefix from the USDA brand owner of UPC 012000001215, and USDA names Pepsico Inc. as brand owner of this barcode. Which PepsiCo entity holds the licence is therefore still unestablished; a cleanup request has been filed on the stub.
  • images · unknown: Open Food Facts holds no photograph of this bottle and no freely licensed picture was found, so the page asks the community for one.
  • evidence · stale: Evidence was observed over a year ago; check for newer labels. Historical evidence remains valid.
  • images · not_researched: No product photographs recorded.
