About
Mug, sometimes styled MUG, is an American brand of root beer and cream soda owned by PepsiCo. It began in San Francisco in 1940 as Belfast Root Beer, launched by New Century Beverage Company, which had held a Pepsi-Cola franchise since 1936; through the 1950s the name ran as Belfast Old Fashioned Mug Root Beer before shortening to Mug Root Beer. A sugar-free version arrived in the late 1960s, and Mug Cream Soda followed. PepsiCo bought the brand in 1986, and since then the logo has shown a bulldog named "Dog" holding a glass of frothy root beer.[1]
