Universal Music GmbH, which presents itself as Universal Music Group Deutschland, is the German recorded-music company of Universal Music Group.[1] The group's own list of its companies carries Universal Music Germany under Germany, together with the labels run there: Better Now Records, Chapter ONE, Deutsche Grammophon, Electrola, PIL x Ventura Records Germany, URBAN, Vertigo/Capitol Germany, Virgin Records Germany and Zeigeist.[2] The company is entered at the Amtsgericht Charlottenburg under HRB 158632 B, gives its address as Mühlenstraße 25, 10243 Berlin, carries the VAT number DE 815415456 and is represented by its managing director Frank Briegmann.[3]
It has held the Electrola label since 2012, the year Universal Music Group's purchase of EMI's German operations brought EMI's German labels into the group.[4][5] Its imprint states that, unless marked otherwise, the trademarks on its label sites — label names, logos and emblems in particular — are protected in favour of Universal Music GmbH.[3]
Its shareholder is Universal Music Entertainment GmbH, the group's Berlin holding company, which has held control of it under a control and profit-transfer agreement since May 2014.[6] Universal Music Group N.V. lists Universal Music GmbH, with its register number, among its German subsidiaries in its 2024 annual report.[7] The legal entity was registered in Cologne in October 2007 and renamed EMI Recorded Music GmbH in March 2008; it moved its seat to Berlin in May 2014, and in July 2014 it absorbed the earlier Universal Music GmbH by merger and took its name.[6]
