About Apress

Apress is a technology-book publisher in New York, trading as Apress Media, LLC, that publishes for programmers, IT professionals and developers.^[1][2] It describes its list as over 3,000 titles across big data, databases, open source, web development, Java, Python, Apple and Swift, alongside its well-known Microsoft and .NET line, and says it keeps editorial staff in the United States, the United Kingdom and Pune, India.^[3] Apress has been part of Springer Science+Business Media since 2007 and is presented today as a Springer Nature book brand, with its own web address resolving to Springer Nature Link.^[2][4][3] Its books carry the ISBN publisher prefixes 978-1-59059 and 978-1-4302, so their barcodes begin 978159059 and 97814302.^[5]

The house grew out of conversations between the authors Dan Appleman and Gary Cornell: the "A" stands for the Author's Press, and Apress's own releases say the two set out in 1998 to build a publisher that put quality first, offering authors equity in the company and paying its technical reviewers partly on how the book did.^[6][7] It published from 2560 9th Street in Berkeley, California, as Apress L.P., whose copyright line runs from 1999, had over 55 titles by April 2002, and sold into the trade through Springer-Verlag New York from the start.^[6][7] Apress joined Springer Science+Business Media in 2007; that group merged with Holtzbrinck's Nature Publishing Group, Palgrave Macmillan and Macmillan Education to form Springer Nature in May 2015, and the imprint's About Us page has called Apress a Springer Nature company since.^[2][8][4] Apress Media, LLC is a California limited liability company, registered with the New York Department of State on 24 March 2010 under DOS ID 3928572 and filing its address as One New York Plaza, Suite 4600.^[1] It published Learn Objective-C on the Mac in 2009, distributed to the trade worldwide by Springer.^[9][10]
