About this product

Chimay Bleue is the strongest of the Trappist ales brewed at Scourmont Abbey in Forges, near Chimay in Hainaut, and this is the 33 cl bottle at 9 % vol.[6] The beer started as Speciale Noel, a Christmas brew sold from 1954, and became the year-round "blue capsule" in 1956; the brewery sells the same beer in the 75 cl bottle as Grande Reserve.[6] It is refermented in the bottle and the front label carries the hexagonal Authentic Trappist Product logo, which the back label explains as certifying that the beer is made inside a Trappist abbey and that most of the income goes to social causes.[7] The operator printed on the pack is S.A. Bieres de Chimay N.V. of Baileux.[8]

More about this product

The brewery was founded inside the abbey in 1862, was the first to put the Trappist Ale designation on its labels, and exports about half of what it makes; the water comes from a well inside the monastery walls and the beer is trucked to a bottling plant twelve kilometres away before three weeks of refermentation.[9] The multilingual back label is printed in several concurrent versions: one carries French, Dutch and German, another adds English, Finnish, Swedish, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian for export.[4]

Coverage & research gaps (9)

Coverage measures the evidence recorded here. It does not rate the product.

  • Identity: 3 / 3 · Name, brand and classification recorded
  • Context: 2 / 3 · Evidence groups assigned to a researched label, edition or analysis
  • Label photographs: 0 / 2 · Researched contexts with an assigned photograph
  • markets · unknown: The export label prints "APPROX. 2.4 STANDARD DRINKS", a statement required on alcohol labels in Australia and in New Zealand. No listing was found that says which of the two this pack serves, so neither country is listed in country_of_sale.
  • identity · disputed: Gall and Gall's Dutch data sheet gives the alcohol content as 8 %. The label, the maker's own page and every retailer that prints the EAN give 9 % vol, which is what this entry records.
  • nutrition · not_applicable: No nutrition values are declared: the pack is exempt and the brewery publishes none for this article.
  • images · not_researched: No photograph of the 2026 label generation's full back surface was available; the English export block is known only from a cropped strip.
  • evidence · stale: Evidence was observed over a year ago; check for newer labels. Historical evidence remains valid.

  • nutrition · not_researched: Nutrition declaration or exemption not recorded.
