About this product
Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies is a limited five-CD box from Deutsche Grammophon, catalogue number 474 018-2, that collects Eugen Jochum's recordings of the nine symphonies with the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, made between 1952 and 1961, together with four overtures.[2] Deutsche Grammophon GmbH issued the compilation in 2002 in its Original Masters series; the Third, Sixth, Seventh and Ninth symphonies are mono recordings, and the discs were pressed in Germany by Universal M & L.[2] MusicBrainz lists barcode 028947401827 for this European release.[3] It is the first of Jochum's three complete Beethoven cycles, recorded for Deutsche Grammophon in the 1950s before his later cycles for Philips and EMI.[4]
More about this product
According to the booklet's inside front cover, Deutsche Grammophon had first issued Jochum's cycle in 1959 as a seven-LP mono box, numbers 19293–99, which was withdrawn in 1966.[2] Discogs groups that box and this CD set as one work.[5] The 2006–2013 Barcodepedia page for this barcode only carried the title "VARIOUS ARTISTS - THE NINE SYMPHONIES;OVERTU", taken from upcdatabase.com.[6]
