About this product
Handel: Israel in Egypt / The Ways of Zion Do Mourn is a two-CD set on the French classical label Erato, catalogue number 2292-45399-2, of John Eliot Gardiner's recording with the Monteverdi Choir and Monteverdi Orchestra.[1][2] It pairs Handel's biblical oratorio Israel in Egypt, HWV 54, recorded in October 1978 at All Saints, Tooting Graveney, with the funeral anthem for Queen Caroline, The Ways of Zion Do Mourn, recorded in January 1978 at Henry Wood Hall, London.[1][2] The recording carries ℗ 1980 Erato Disques S.A.; the discs were made in Germany, the repress with runouts dated October 1999 by Warner Music Manufacturing Europe at Alsdorf.[1][3]
Handel wrote Israel in Egypt in one month in 1738 and first performed it at the King's Theatre in the Haymarket on 4 April 1739; he reworked the 1737 funeral anthem as the opening part of the first version.[4] According to Wikipedia, many modern performances of the oratorio have used Handel's original three-part version since Gardiner's 1978 recording.[4] Erato also issued the recording on CD as ECD 88182 in 1987 and as 4509-99758-2 in 1995, and Warner Classics remastered it in 2001 as 0927-41394-2.[5]

- identity · unknown: The first release date of the 2292-45399-2 CD issue: Discogs gives no year for either pressing and the library record gives only ℗ 1980; the 10/99 runouts date the repress only.
- relationships · unknown: No source names the licensee of GS1 company prefix 0022924; the barcode embeds the Erato catalogue number 2292-45399-2, but no gs1_prefix_owner edge is recorded.
- relationships · unknown: Discogs names Record Service Alsdorf as the pressing plant of the earlier pressing; which company stub that name maps to is not settled, so no manufactured_by row is recorded for it.
- markets · unknown: Amazon.com ASIN B000005E6L ("Handel Israel in Egypt", Erato, 2 discs) has the same tracklist and performers but prints no barcode or catalogue number and only marketplace offers, so it is not counted as a US market row.
