Allura Red AC is an organic compound classified as an azo compound and a disulfonate, known as FD&C Red 40 in the United States and as E129 in Europe, and used as a red food dye.[1] It is usually supplied as its red sodium salt, though calcium and potassium salts are also used, and all of them dissolve in water with maximum absorbance near 504 nm.[1] The Allied Chemical Corporation created it in 1971; the European Union approves it subject to a warning label, the US Food and Drug Administration considers it safe in food, drugs and cosmetics, and California has banned it in food.[1] It is printed as "Red 40" on the United States label of Mountain Dew Code Red.[2]
