About Sony Music Australia

Sony Music Australia is the Australian record company of Sony Music Entertainment, registered as Sony Music Entertainment Australia Pty Ltd and based in Sydney.[1][2] It is a private company limited by shares, entered on the ASIC register on 21 November 2003 under ACN 107 133 184.[3][2] Between 19 November 2004 and 5 January 2009 it was named Sony BMG Music Entertainment (Australia) Pty Limited, the Australian company of the Sony BMG joint venture, before taking its present name.[4] Under the Sony BMG name it distributed releases such as the 2006 Australian pressing of Matisyahu's Live at Stubb's.[5]

The company was first entered in the Australian Business Register on 1 April 2004 as Sony Music Operations (Australia) Pty Limited, took the name Sony Music (Australia) Pty Limited on 28 July 2004 and Sony BMG Music Entertainment (Australia) Pty Limited on 19 November 2004; it has used the trading name Sony BMG since 8 March 2005 and has registered business names including So Fresh, Bandit.fm and On Repeat.[4] Discogs files it under Sony BMG Music Entertainment, the Sony and Bertelsmann joint venture that was itself renamed Sony Music Entertainment in January 2009.[6] Before this company, Sony's Sydney record business was run by Sony Music Entertainment (Australia) Limited, a separate and older company; Discogs assigns releases up to February 2004 to that company and releases from March 2004 to this one under its Sony BMG name.[7]
