About this product
A History of the Mind: Evolution and the Birth of Consciousness is the psychologist Nicholas Humphrey's book on the mind–body problem; this barcode is the first Copernicus softcover edition, published in New York on 18 June 1999 under Springer's science trade imprint.[2] Humphrey, an English neuropsychologist whose early work with Lawrence Weiskrantz led to the discovery of blindsight, argues that raw sensation is central to every conscious state and that consciousness evolved from our ancestors' bodily responses to pain and pleasure.[3] The Library of Congress catalogues the volume at 238 pages and 23 cm, with bibliographical references and an index.[4] Springer still offers the softcover, and Barnes & Noble lists it in the United States at USD 39.99.[2][1]
The text first appeared from Chatto & Windus in London in 1992 and from Simon & Schuster in New York the same year, followed by Vintage and HarperPerennial paperbacks in 1993; Copernicus reprinted it in 1999 and Springer's page still carries the 1992 copyright.[5][6][2] Reviewers divided sharply, from positive notices in New Statesman and Society and The Lancet, through mixed readings by Lewis Wolpert and George Armitage Miller, to a dismissal by the philosopher Colin McGinn in the London Review of Books.[5]
