- Spanish label, 2020 artwork supported · Compare evidence
No superscript and no certification footnote on the cocoa. Its nutrition panel is headed "del producto preparado" and declares only the prepared drink
- Spanish label, Rainforest Alliance supported · Compare evidence
The same list with the cocoa now footnoted to Rainforest Alliance. The preparation panel above it reads "Pon dos cucharadas (14 g) de ColaCao en un vaso o taza y vierte la leche semidesnatada (200 ml)". The barcode panel carries the Green Dot, the Spanish yellow-bin mark, Calidalia and the ADO Olympic rings
- Spanish label with a per-100 g column supported · Compare evidence
A four-column panel headed only "INFORMACIÓN NUTRICIONAL MEDIA": per 100 g of powder as sold, per 100 ml prepared, per cup and the reference intake per cup. This is the only label read here that declares the powder itself

About this product
ColaCao el Original is the soluble cocoa powder that Spanish households stir into milk at breakfast, sold here in a yellow 383 g jar with a red screw lid holding about 27 servings.[3][4] The food is named on the side as a "preparado alimenticio al cacao" and has six ingredients: sugar, natural fat-reduced cocoa at 22%, a bracketed kola-malted cereal cream of wheat flour, barley malt extract and a natural kola-nut flavouring, mineral salts of calcium and phosphorus, flavourings and salt, with wheat and barley set in bold as the allergens.[5][6] The front carries "con cacao natural", "sin aditivos" and "cacao obtenido de cultivo sostenible"; the barcode panel adds the Green Dot, the Spanish yellow-bin mark and the ADO rings the brand carries as a sponsor of the Spanish Olympic team.[3][7]
More about this product
The nutrition on this jar is declared for the drink as prepared, two spoonfuls of 14 g in 200 ml of semi-skimmed milk, so those figures include the milk and are not properties of the powder.[8] One jar photographed in March 2025 prints a fuller panel that adds a per-100 g column for the powder itself, at 1593 kJ and 377 kcal with 70 g of sugars and 7,8 g of fibre; a jar photographed that November still prints only the two prepared columns, so both artworks were on sale in the same year.[4][9] The maker's own artwork sheet of April 2020 specifies UTZ wording for the cocoa, while the pack photographed in 2021 footnotes it to Rainforest Alliance instead.[6][5]
Two brothers-in-law from the Gràcia district of Barcelona, José María Ventura and José Ignacio Ferrero, created ColaCao in 1945; their firm Nutrexpa, founded in 1940, put the powder on sale in 1946 and made it famous with the radio jingle "Yo soy aquel negrito del África tropical".[10][11] Nutrexpa was divided between the founding families with effect from 1 January 2015: the cocoa business went to the Ferrero family as Idilia Foods, the biscuit brands to the Ventura family as Adam Foods.[12][13] The kola nut whose extract flavours the cereal cream is the seed of Cola acuminata and Cola nitida, West African trees whose caffeine-bearing seeds also gave cola drinks their name.[14]

- nutrition · disputed: Two panel artworks are in circulation. The jar photographed on 2025-03-06 prints four columns including per 100 g of powder as sold; the jar photographed on 2025-11-21, like those of 2020 and 2021, prints only the two prepared columns. Which is current is unresolved. The previous version of this entry stated that the jar prints no declaration for the powder as sold, which the four-column photograph refutes
- nutrition · disputed: Open Food Facts types calcium as 239 mg per 100 ml of the prepared drink where every photographed label prints 128 mg, and the label's own cup column (267 mg) is consistent with 128 mg. The label is followed
- packaging · unknown: The cocoa certification changed from UTZ, which Idilia's 2020 artwork sheet specifies together with its logo and wording, to Rainforest Alliance, footnoted on the 2021 pack. No source read here dates the switch
- relationships · unknown: The operator block reproduced in the artwork sheet gives Idilia's Valencia address, Av. Aragón 30, while the sheet's own footer gives the Barcelona address, C/Lepanto 410. The previous version recorded the Barcelona one. No photographed surface shows the operator block at all
- markets · unknown: Open Food Facts tags this barcode France and Morocco. No listing in either country names the GTIN, and the three photographs Open Food Facts files under French language keys are in fact Spanish, so there is no evidence of a French label at all
- identity · unknown: Open Food Facts lists a sibling barcode 0000048768733 for "Colacao 383g"; that is not a valid GS1 code and no relation to it is recorded
