That short symbology exists for packages on which a full EAN-13 will not fit, cigarette packs being the textbook case, and a GTIN-8 opens with the prefix of a national GS1 organisation.[2] Here the prefix is 421, inside the 400-440 block GS1 issues to GS1 Germany; GS1's own table also reserves 0000001 to 0000099 unused, precisely to avoid collision with eight-digit codes.[3]

Two records name the article. The 2006-2013 Barcodepedia held it in 2009 as "Camel natural flavor 20", produced in Germany by an unknown producer, container "Package 20 pcs", contents tobacco; that page is a dated contributor transcription of a pack and is cited here for identity only.[4] An EAN dictionary entered by a scanner user records the same barcode as CAMEL NATURAL FLAVOUR BROWN, in British spelling and with a shade word the old page does not contain, so it is not an echo of it.[5] Camel has belonged to Japan Tobacco International outside the United States since 1999, and to R. J. Reynolds inside it.[6]
The only photograph filed under the barcode, uploaded in March 2024, shows the warning face of a French standardised pack: the combined health warning, the Tabac info service panel with the 3989 quitline, the Triman "éléments d'emballage, bac de tri" mark and the "filtre contenant du plastique" marking are all French or EU legal marks, so the pack was sold in France.[1] The brand face was not photographed, so the picture fixes the market and the product type without confirming which Camel variant the barcode now carries. The name here is the name the barcode is documented under, not one read off the 2024 pack.
A caution for anyone extending this page: the French homologated price list of 1 January 2026 lists thirteen Camel cigarette lines in packs of twenty under JTI, among them Camel Essential, Camel Filters, Camel Blue, Camel Black, Camel Shift and Camel Fresh, all at 13,00 EUR, together with XL and XXL packs of twenty-five and thirty, and no Camel "Natural Flavour" at all.[7] Whether this barcode was renamed into one of those lines or retired needs a source that prints the barcode beside the name; none was found.
