About this product
Unico Red Kidney Beans is a 540 mL (19 fl oz) can of red kidney beans packed with water, salt, calcium chloride and disodium EDTA, with "High in fibre" and a Product of Canada roundel on the front.[2] The current bilingual label gives 150 Calories, 9 g fibre and 280 mg sodium per 1/2 cup (125 mL).[2] Unico, a Toronto brand of Mediterranean-style foods founded in 1917, has belonged to Sun-Brite Foods Inc. since 1997.[3] Sun-Brite, based in Ruthven, Ontario, processed thirteen kinds of beans as of 2025.[4] Unico sells the beans in 540 mL and 796 mL cans.[5] An Ontario cash-and-carry lists this barcode at CAD 1.99.[1]
More about this product
The barcode was already in use in 2008, when the earlier Barcodepedia listed "UNICO Red Kidney Beans" in a 19 fl oz/540 mL container.[6] A can photographed in 2023 carried an older Nutrition Facts layout with 130 Calories and 260 mg sodium per 125 mL, and listed disodium EDTA before calcium chloride.[7] Unico's own product page shows that older layout but prints 420 mg sodium.[5]
