About this product
World Soccer Anthems is a 2002 Philips compact disc of the national anthems of 23 countries, played by the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa, followed by five classical pieces: "Nessun dorma" sung by Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti, Elmer Bernstein's "The Great Escape", two Verdi choruses and Handel's "Zadok the Priest".[2] It came out in Europe on 13 May 2002 as 470 383-2, with ℗ Decca Music Group Limited, and in the United States as 289 470 383-2.[1][2] The 2002 FIFA World Cup was held in South Korea and Japan from 31 May to 30 June that year.[3] The European disc was pressed in Langenhagen by Universal M & L,[4] and German copies carried a sticker reading "Die National-Hymnen zur WM".[1]
More about this product
Ozawa was the orchestra's honorary conductor laureate from its founding in 1972.[5] Apple Music sells the album digitally as "World Cup Anthems", with its cover file named after this barcode.[6] Amazon.com still lists the CD,[7] and the old Barcodepedia recorded it in 2007 as "Various Artists – World Soccer Anthems", from upcdatabase.com.[8]
