  • 50 g tin, later back label (artwork code 7021) supported · Compare evidence

Read from the back of the tin. Trilingual label: the English statement above, INGRÉDIENTS Sucre · Dextrose · Arômes (Menthe poivrée, Menthol) · Gélatine de bœuf under an F badge, and INGREDIËNTEN Suiker · dextrose · aroma's (pepermunt, menthol) · rundergelatine under an NL badge. A second upload of the same back, dated 2016-11-23, carries identical text, and the lid artwork is unchanged across the 2013, 2015 and 2021 uploads. The same statement still appears on the 32 g roll that replaced this tin.

  • 50 g tin, earlier back label (artwork code 7014) supported · Compare evidence

Read from the back of the tin. This revision lists glucose and menthol as separate ingredients, carries the claim NO ARTIFICIAL COLOURS OR ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURINGS and a Guideline Daily Amounts strip, and has a French block (bonbons à la menthe extra forts) but no Dutch one. The bars of the barcode on this photo decode to EAN-8 00011501 while the human-readable line beside them is printed M 0011501 S, one zero short.

About this product

Curiously Strong Mints were Marks & Spencer's extra-strong pressed peppermints, sold in a hinged 50 g tin under the retailer's own label and described on the pack as "extra strong peppermints".[2][3] The tin was made in the Netherlands for Marks and Spencer p.l.c., the Chester-registered food arm of the London retailer that Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer founded in Leeds in 1884.[3][4] Its barcode is an EAN-8, printed on the back beside the letters M and S.[3] Two label revisions are recorded here: a 2013 statement of sugar, dextrose, glucose, peppermint flavouring, beef gelatine and menthol, and a later one that drops the separate glucose and menthol and reads sugar, dextrose, flavourings and beef gelatine.[5][3] M&S has since dropped the tin; its Chewing Gum & Mints range now carries the line only as a 32 g roll.[1][6]

Marks and Spencer p.l.c. has been on the Companies House register since 1926 and is a subsidiary of Marks and Spencer Group plc, which notified a holding of 75 per cent or more of its shares and votes in 2016.[7] The barcode reached this site from two directions: the 2006-2013 Barcodepedia, which catalogued it as "curiously strong mints", and an Open Food Facts record photographed between 2013 and 2021.[8]

Where it's sold

  • Marks & Spencer Food information[1] United Kingdom · derived M&S's own Chewing Gum & Mints range, read on 2026-09-17, holds 15 items and lists Curiously Strong Mints only as a 32 g roll and Sugar Free Curiously Strong Mints as an 18 g tin: the 50 g tin has gone from the maker's range, so the listing that remains may be its successor rather than this article. The tin itself prints a United Kingdom M&S address. No GTIN is shown on either page. · made in Netherlands

A listing is evidence that this barcode is sold there, on that date; a price is what that listing showed, not a recommended price. Store links may be affiliate links (how this works).

Coverage & research gaps (13)

Coverage measures the evidence recorded here. It does not rate the product.

  • Identity: 3 / 3 · Name, brand and classification recorded
  • Context: 2 / 3 · Evidence groups assigned to a researched label, edition or analysis
  • Label photographs: 0 / 2 · Researched contexts with an assigned photograph
  • 50 g tin, later back label (artwork code 7021): nutrient evidence: 9 / 9 · Recorded nutrient rows linked to a source; not the number of nutrients that ought to exist
  • 50 g tin, earlier back label (artwork code 7014): nutrient evidence: 10 / 10 · Recorded nutrient rows linked to a source; not the number of nutrients that ought to exist
  • relationships · not_applicable: The barcode is a GTIN-8: the bars on the back photo decode to EAN-8 00011501. GS1 allocates GTIN-8 numbers one at a time rather than out of a company prefix, so there is no prefix holder to name and no gs1_prefix_owner row. The lookup reports the zero-padded form as a GTIN-13 on prefix 000.
  • relationships · unknown: The pack says only "Made in the Netherlands" and carries the M&S supplier code SC6366. No source found names the Dutch manufacturer, so manufactured_by is left empty.
  • ingredients · unknown: The 2013 list names Dextrose and Glucose as two separate ingredients. Glucose syrup is the usual second glucose in a pressed mint, but the label does not print it, so both rows point at ingredient/glucose and neither asserts a syrup.
  • markets · unknown: The tin's back carries French and Dutch language blocks under F and NL badges and Open Food Facts tags the record France and United Kingdom. A country code printed once before text in its own language marks the language, not a market, and no French or Dutch listing of this 50 g tin was found, so only GB is listed.
  • identity · unknown: A second Open Food Facts record, EAN-8 01241501, carries the name Curiously Strong Mints at the same 50 g net content for Marks & Spencer. Whether it is a later barcode for this tin, another variant, or a duplicate record is unresolved.
  • identity · unknown: M&S publishes no GTIN for the 32 g roll that replaced this tin, only its own product code 00906562, so superseded_by is left empty.
  • evidence · stale: web.archive.org answered HTTP 503 (Internet Archive temporarily offline) on 2026-09-17, so neither the 2009 capture of this barcode's old Barcodepedia page nor any archived M&S listing of the 50 g tin could be read.
  • markets · unknown: Searched amazon.co.uk on 2026-09-17 for "Curiously Strong Mints 50 g", the brand alone ("marks spencer"), and 000000011501 (also 0000000011501); plus "M&S Curiously Strong Mints", "Marks and Spencer mints", "Marks Spencer Curiously Strong Mints 50g", "M&S mints tin" and "Curiously Strong Mints" sorted by price ascending: no listing of this article; No Marks & Spencer mints of this line on the store at all. The only "Curiously Strong Mints 50 g" results are Altoids-brand case packs, e.g. B000FKQD5G "Altoids Peppermint Curiously Strong Mints 50g Tin Box Of 12 Tins" (Grocery > Confectionery > Mints), whose details table prints GTIN 10022000631401
