About Marks & Spencer
Marks & Spencer is the own label of the British retailer of the same name, founded as a Leeds penny bazaar by Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer in 1884.[1] Almost everything the chain sells carries it, and for most of the twentieth century its goods were branded St Michael instead; that name was dropped in the early 2000s in favour of the retailer's own.[1] On food packs the wordmark MARKS & SPENCER appears beside the M&S device, as on the Curiously Strong Mints tin.[2] The current food range is catalogued on the retailer's own site.[3]
