Marks and Spencer p.l.c. is the operating company of the British retailer M&S, incorporated on 17 June 1926 and registered at Companies House under number 00214436, with its registered office at Waterside House, 35 North Wharf Road, London.[1] The business itself dates from 1884, when Michael Marks opened a penny bazaar on Leeds Kirkgate Market and later took the bookkeeper Thomas Spencer as his partner.[2] It is the company printed on M&S own-label food: the Curiously Strong Mints tin carries a copyright line for Marks and Spencer plc at PO Box 3339, Chester CH99 9QS, which makes it the food business operator for that pack.[3]
