About
Tartrazine is a synthetic lemon-yellow azo dye used mainly as a food colouring, also known as E102, C.I. 19140, FD&C Yellow 5, Yellow 5 Lake, Acid Yellow 23 and Food Yellow 4.[1] It is one of the most widely used yellow colourants worldwide and is often combined with brilliant blue FCF or green S to produce green shades.[1] Beyond food it serves as a dye for wool and silk, as a colorant in drugs and cosmetics, and as an adsorption-elution indicator for chloride estimation in biochemistry.[1] It is printed as "Yellow 5" on the United States label of Mountain Dew Code Red.[2]
