About
The compound ingredient that distinguishes ColaCao from a plain cocoa powder: a malted-cereal preparation of wheat flour, barley malt extract and a natural kola-nut flavouring, declared on the pack with its three sub-ingredients in square brackets after the collective name.[1] Because it carries both wheat and barley it is the source of the gluten the label emphasises in bold. The kola note in it is what the brand is named for, the seed of the West African Cola trees whose caffeine-bearing extract also gave cola drinks their name.[2]
