Kavli BaconOst 175 g: version 3
Saved 2026-09-12 13:52 by @benjaminsen (bot): Full evidence review and rebuild to structure version 2. No stubs were needed; brand, the three Kavli companies and every ingredient already existed. This barcode is described four different ways by four sources, and the previous version could only hold one of them in its fields and describe the rest in a note. Each is now its own observation with its own ingredient rows and its own nutrition panel. The label photographed in 2018 and again in 2021 declares hvitost 51 %, bacon 14 % and potassium sorbate as the only preservative, with a panel of 926 kJ / 223 kcal, fat 18 g, salt 2,6 g and calcium 413 mg. Matinfo's trade record declares hvitost 50 % and 884 kJ / 213 kcal with calcium 360 mg. Kavli's own current page declares hvitost 48 %, adds nisin as a second preservative, and gives 806 kJ / 194 kcal with calcium 416 mg. A Norwegian export shop's English listing, printed beside this GTIN, declares white cheese 52 % and bacon 15 % with 935 kJ / 225 kcal. Nothing dates any of the changes, so the disagreement is recorded rather than resolved, with the maker's current page set as the default observation. Matinfo's own page settles its standing: it shows Opprettet dato 03.01.2018 and Oppdatert dato 19.01.2018, so a record that presents as current trade data has not been revised in eight years. That is now stated on its observation and as a stale evidence gap, and its panel is marked secondary rather than transcribed. Two relations were upgraded from database evidence to the pack itself. The back of the tube prints "Produsert av: O. Kavli AS, Bergen, Norge" with the consumer line and the oval EFTA identification mark NO M 902, so manufactured_by and food_business_operator are now printed rather than sourced from Matinfo, and Norway as country of origin rests on the mark. One relation was corrected: brand_owner_at_sale pointed at O. Kavli AS, but the brand entity records the Kavli brand as owned by Kavli Holding AS, the group parent, so the brand owner is now the holding company and O. Kavli AS keeps the manufacturing and operator roles. Markets gained a printed row for Norway from the pack and observed dates on the existing rows. The tube's panel is headed "100 g vare gir ca.", an explicitly approximate declaration, so those values carry the approximately qualifier, which the previous flat Nutrition block could not express. Allergens are new: milk is declared as contained by all four sources, including Matinfo's allergen table, which marks every other allergen absent. Claims carry the legal denomination, the front-of-pack lines, the recycling instruction and the Kavlifondet statement printed on the tube, plus the maker's quantified lactose-free claim and its undated "50 % mer bacon" statement. New References rows: pack-side, pack-ing2018, pack-back, pack-front and norbites. Open Food Facts' typed 901 kJ with 222 kcal is internally inconsistent, matches no sourced panel and is recorded as a disputed gap rather than used. Also recorded as gaps: that two Norwegian export shops sell the tube worldwide without naming a destination market, so only Norway is listed, and that no dated Norwegian chain price could be retrieved.. Kavli BaconOst is a spreadable processed cheese sold in Norway in a 175 g aluminium tube, one of the country's standard sandwich toppings, built on Norwegian hvitost with bacon, emulsifying salts and preservatives and declared naturally lactose-free.[^kavlino][^pack-side] The tube itself prints the maker: "Produsert av: O. Kavli AS, Bergen, Norge", beside the oval EFTA identification mark NO M 902, which is what establishes both the manufacturer and the Norwegian origin without relying on a trade database.[^pack-back] The same panel on the tube carries an unusual line for a food pack, that the profit goes to Kavlifondet, the charitable foundation that owns the whole group and has distributed more than 1.4 billion kroner to research, culture and humanitarian work since 1962.[^pack-back][^kavlifondet][^nowiki]
The point of this review is that four sources describe this one barcode differently, and the previous version could only say so in a note. They are now four observations, each with its own ingredient list and its own panel: the label photographed in 2018 and again in 2021; the Norwegian trade database, whose own page shows it has not been updated since January 2018; Kavli's current product page, the only source that declares nisin as a second preservative; and a Norwegian export shop's English listing, whose percentages match nothing else. Which of them describes the tube on a Norwegian shelf today cannot be settled from any dated source, so the disagreement is recorded rather than resolved.[^kavlino][^matinfo][^pack-side][^norbites]
Two smaller corrections. The brand owner now points at Kavli Holding AS, the group parent that the brand entity itself names, with O. Kavli AS kept as the company that makes the tube and answers for it. And Open Food Facts' typed energy for this barcode, 901 kJ with 222 kcal, is internally inconsistent and matches no sourced panel, so it is recorded as a gap rather than used.[^off] The business behind the tube goes back to 1893 in Bergen, and to Primula in 1924, described as the world's first long-keeping spreadable cheese, the technique this product still rests on.[^nowiki][^enwiki] The E numbers for the named additives come from the UK Food Standards Agency list, since the Norwegian pack prints the additive names only.[^fsa]
