## About <!--about-->
Kavli BaconOst is a spreadable processed cheese sold in Norway in a 175 g aluminium tube, and one of the country's standard sandwich toppings.[^kavlino] The recipe is built on Norwegian hvitost — a rennet-curd cheese — at 48 %, with bacon at 14 %, emulsifying salts and two preservatives; the pack is naturally lactose-free.[^kavlino] The tube is made by O. Kavli AS at the group's plant in Bergen, which Matinfo names as the producer registered against this barcode.[^matinfo][^nowiki] Kavli's own page lists the 175 g tube as stocked in every store of all ten Norwegian grocery chains, which is the evidence behind the single market row.[^kavlino] Norway is also the country of origin: Matinfo records Norge as both opprinnelsesland and opphavsland, the ingredient list opens "Norsk smelteost", and the back of the tube carries the oval EFTA health mark NO M 902.[^matinfo][^off] Open Food Facts additionally tags France and Germany, but no retailer listing was found that shows this 175 g tube on sale outside Norway, so those countries are left out.[^off]

The barcode has been photographed across three label generations, and they do not agree. The ingredient strip photographed in 2018 declares hvitost at 51 % and no nisin; Matinfo's trade record, last updated in January 2018, declares 50 %; Kavli's current page declares 48 % for the tube and 49 % for the 235 g beger, and adds nisin as a second preservative.[^off][^matinfo][^kavlino] The current wording is stored as the live ingredient rows and the photographed 2018 list is kept alongside it with an until date, which is the date of the photograph rather than a known changeover. The four nutrition panels differ too, so the Nutrition note records all of them.

Kavli is unusual among food groups in who owns it. The whole Kavli group is held by Kavlifondet, a charitable foundation registered at Nesttun outside Bergen, which distributes the group's profit to research, culture and humanitarian work and has given away more than 1.4 billion kroner since 1962.[^kavlifondet][^omkavli] The business itself goes back to 1893, when Olav Kavli set up in Bergen; in 1924 he launched Primula, described as the world's first long-keeping spreadable cheese, the technique this tube still rests on.[^nowiki][^enwiki] O. Kavli AS was registered in its present form in 1994 and employs 158 people.[^brregkavli] The E numbers named on this page for the emulsifying salts and preservatives come from the UK Food Standards Agency list; the Norwegian pack prints the additive names only.[^fsa]
