Metcash Limited is an Australian wholesaler and service provider to independent retailers in food, liquor and hardware, listed on the ASX as MTS and headquartered in Macquarie Park, Sydney.^[1] Its divisions are Food, Liquor (Australian Liquor Marketers) and Hardware (Total Tools and Hardware Group), and it licenses banners it owns, including IGA, Home Hardware, Mitre 10, Total Tools, Cellarbrations and Thirsty Camel, to independently owned stores.^[1] Its private labels include Black & Gold and Community Co,^[1] the latter launched by Metcash Supermarkets for IGA stores from December 2016.^[2] The company has no parent: in the LEI register it reports that no other entity consolidates it in its accounts, either as direct or as ultimate parent.^[3][4]

The business traces to the corner store Joe David opened in Woolloomooloo, Sydney, in 1927, trading as Davids; a wholesale warehouse in Redfern followed in 1935, and Davids brought the IGA banner to Australia in 1988.^[5] In 2000 Metcash Trading Limited replaced Davids Limited, its name acknowledging the South African Metro Cash & Carry, which was the majority shareholder until 2004.^[5] Metcash bought Foodland Associated in 2005, took over the Franklins brand in 2010, brought in Mitre 10 from 2010 and acquired Total Tools in stages between 2020 and 2023.^[5] The registered office at 1 Thomas Holt Drive, Macquarie Park, and Australian company number 112 073 480 are as GLEIF records them.^[6]
