About Kaufland Stiftung
Kaufland Stiftung & Co. KG is the Neckarsulm retail company behind the Kaufland hypermarket chain, which runs more than 1,500 stores in Germany and seven other European countries, among them Croatia.[1] Like the discounter Lidl it belongs to the Schwarz group, whose voting rights are bundled in the Schwarz Unternehmenstreuhand KG.[1][2] It is entered at the Amtsgericht Stuttgart under HRA 102851 and registered at Rötelstr. 35, Neckarsulm.[3][4] The GLEIF records of Kaufland Hrvatska k.d., the Croatian Kaufland company, name it as that company's direct and ultimate consolidating parent.[5]
The business goes back to the Lidl & Schwarz KG of Heilbronn, which opened its first self-service hypermarket as Handelshof in Backnang in 1968; the first store under the Kaufland name opened in Neckarsulm in 1984, and the first outside Germany in Kladno, Czech Republic, in 1998.[1] The Familienstiftung Schwarz, a private family foundation seated in Dresden, is a general partner of the KG, and Dieter Schwarz holds an indirect interest through the PVG Geschäftsführungs-KG.[2]
