Spearmint oil is the aromatic essential oil of spearmint, Mentha spicata, a perennial mint native to Europe and southern temperate Asia and naturalised across much of the temperate world.[1] The species carries many synonyms, Mentha viridis among them, which is why cosmetic labels declare the oil under the INCI name Mentha Viridis Leaf Oil.[1] Its character comes largely from carvone rather than the menthol that dominates peppermint, giving it the softer, sweeter mint note used in toothpaste, chewing gum and herbal teas.[1]
