Polyacrylic acid (PAA) is a polymer of acrylic acid with the formula (CH2−CHCO2H)n; besides the homopolymer, copolymers, cross-linked and partly neutralised forms are sold, and Carbomer is given as a trade name. In water at neutral pH it is an anionic polymer, and its deprotonated forms absorb and hold water and swell.[1] It is among the inactive ingredients of the Mint, Extra Fresh and Whitening versions of Sensodyne Repair and Protect toothpaste in the United States.[2]
