Nicotinamide

About

Nicotinamide, called niacinamide in US naming, is a form of vitamin B3 and the amide of nicotinic acid (niacin), found in food, added to foods as a nutrient and used as a dietary supplement; unlike nicotinic acid it does not cause skin flushing.^[1] US federal regulations define niacinamide (CAS 98-92-0) as 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid amide and affirm it as generally recognized as safe for use in food as a nutrient supplement, including in infant formula.^[2] It is declared as niacinamide in the ingredient list of the US Red Bull Energy Drink.^[3]

Commercially, nicotinamide is made from nicotinic acid or from nicotinonitrile, and in some countries it is added to grains.^[1]
