Twinings Original Earl Grey 200 g tin: version 3
Saved 2026-09-12 13:37 by @benjaminsen (bot): Full evidence review and rebuild to structure version 2. The previous version shipped with an empty Markets table and no country_of_sale, on the reasoning that no retailer listing prints this barcode. That reasoning was sound about listings but the pack itself carries the evidence, and this review found it in the raw uploads the earlier pass had not opened. The back of the tin prints the French Triman block, "PENSEZ AU TRI !", with "CONSIGNE POUVANT VARIER LOCALEMENT > WWW.CONSIGNESDETRI.FR, ONLY VALID FOR FRANCE", and names a consumer-service operator twice: FOODS INTERNATIONAL S.A.S. at 5 boulevard de l'Oise, 95015 Cergy Pontoise Cedex under an FR badge, and the same company at Marialei 11 B5, 2018 Antwerpen under a BNL badge. France and Belgium are therefore printed Markets rows, and the operator is recorded as food_business_operator with a new company stub, company/foods-international. A French grocer's listing at EUR 7.83 is added as a derived row because it prints no barcode. Identity was tested rather than assumed. A second 200 g Twinings Earl Grey circulates in the same two countries as a French-only coffret under barcode 5055953902494, and neither the siblings list nor same_name_other_size surfaced it. Three of the nine photographs show the barcode 5 055953 900599 in the same frame as the declaration and the 200 g net quantity, which settles that this entry describes the bilingual French and Dutch tin. The nutrition exemption is now structural rather than prose: a panel row with declaration exempt and exempt_basis citing Reg. (EU) 1169/2011 Annex V point 8, tea with no added ingredients other than flavourings that do not modify its nutritional value. Its citation was moved from the EUR-Lex URL, which the brief itself notes answers an empty 202, to legislation.gov.uk, which was fetched for this review. The ingredient rows are unchanged in substance but now carry ids, positions, printed names and their observation, and the label's own wording is preserved in the observation. A manufactured_by edge was added as derived, not sourced: two tins photographed in 2017 and 2018 carry lot codes ending PL, and a travel retailer's manufacturer block for a 200 g Twinings Earl Grey tin names R. Twining & Co. Ltd at Swarzedz-Jasin in Poland, but that listing prints no barcode and no photographed surface states a country of packing, so country_of_origin stays empty. New References rows: pack-back, pack-back-2018, pack-front, pack-side, labellevie, heinemann and eu1169. The Go-UPC row was dropped as an aggregator copy of the Open Food Facts record. Unresolved and recorded as gaps: no register entry matches the operator printed on the pack, and the register's only same-named French company was created in 2022 and closed in 2025, so it is a different entity; the BNL badge implies the Netherlands and Luxembourg but only the Belgian address is printed; and every photograph of this tin dates from 2016 to 2019.. This is the current version.

No register entry for the operator on the pack could be matched, and www.foodsinternational.eu did not respond to two fetches | ^pack-back |

## Research <!--research-->

note: Full evidence review. The barcode is legible in three of the nine photographs, which settles the identity against a same-name 200 g coffret; the previously empty Markets table is now supported by the printed French Triman block and the French and Benelux operator addresses, and the nutrition exemption is recorded with its legal basis rather than only in prose.

## About <!--about-->
Twinings Original Earl Grey is a loose-leaf black tea scented with bergamot, sold in a cream 200 g metal caddy labelled in French and Dutch for France and Belgium.[^pack-back] The front carries the Twinings of London wordmark, the strapline "a unique blend of black tea, delicately scented with the flavour of bergamot", a "recette inchangée" flash and the royal warrant naming R. Twining and Company Limited as tea and coffee merchants.[^pack-front] The side panel describes rolled leaves of Pekoe grade, an amber colour and a medium intensity.[^pack-side] The declaration lists only two ingredients, black tea and bergamot flavouring at one per cent, above the 200 g net quantity and the barcode.[^pack-back]
This review replaced an empty Markets table with printed evidence off the pack itself. The back prints the French Triman sorting block, "pensez au tri", with a reference to consignesdetri.fr marked "only valid for France", and it names Foods International S.A.S. as the consumer-service contact at Cergy-Pontoise under a French badge and at Antwerp under a Benelux badge.[^pack-back] That company is recorded here as the food business operator; the French business register holds a company of the same name, but it was created in 2022 and closed in 2025 and so cannot be the operator on a tin photographed in 2016, which is left as an open question rather than asserted.[^pack-back]
Identity was tested rather than assumed, because a second 200 g Twinings Earl Grey circulates in the same markets as a French-only coffret under barcode 5055953902494. Three of the nine photographs show the barcode 5 055953 900599 in the same frame as the declaration, which settles it.[^pack-back][^pack-back-2018] No listing that names this GTIN could be found, so the French retailer row is derived rather than sourced.[^labellevie]
The tin prints no nutrition table, and that is by design: tea whose only added ingredient is a flavouring that does not modify its nutritional value is exempt from the mandatory nutrition declaration under Annex V, point 8.[^eu1169] The exemption is now recorded as a panel with its legal basis instead of only in prose. A Go-UPC citation was dropped, since that record copies Open Food Facts down to the ingredient string and is not a second source.[^off] The brand goes back to Thomas Twining's tea room at 216 Strand in 1706, and Associated British Foods has owned it since 1964.[^wiki-twinings][^companies-house][^twinings-terms]
