Instant tea is a powdered tea preparation that becomes tea when water is added; the earliest form was patented in the United Kingdom in 1885 as a paste of concentrated tea extract, sugar and evaporated milk, and spray drying later made it possible to dry tea concentrate without cooking away its flavour.
