Artificial apple flavouring is a flavouring named after apple whose flavouring component is made by synthesis rather than drawn from the fruit, and a label that prints the word artificial is saying exactly that. It closes the ingredient list of the 200 mL Appy export carton, after the antioxidant and behind 2.0 % apple juice concentrate, which is the only apple the list declares by weight.[^pack] Labels outside the European Union use the term freely; within it the parallel wording is the plain "flavouring", because Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008 reserves the word natural for a flavouring component obtained from the named source.
