## About <!--about-->
Communications is a segment of the GS1 Global Product Classification, the standard that lets trading partners group products the same way everywhere. A segment is the highest level of the classification and is defined as a particular industry.[^how-gpc-works] Publication 286 gives this segment no definition text of its own, nor any for the single family beneath it, so none is reproduced here.[^gpc] That family repeats the segment's own name, Communications (66010000), and divides into five classes: Communication Accessories (66010100), Fixed Communication Devices (66010200), Mobile Communication Devices/Services (66010300), Communication Variety Packs (66010400) and Signage (66010500).[^gpc]

Below the segment the hierarchy runs through family and class to the brick, which is the level products are actually classified against. The three upper layers exist only to reach the right brick and are not communicated through the GS1 data pool, which is why a product page carries a brick code and never this one.[^nutshell] Worked through, the chain reads: the brick Smartphones (10001198) sits in the class Mobile Communication Devices/Services (66010300), in the family Communications (66010000), in this segment.[^gpc] Despite that class name, everything under it is a barcodeable article rather than a subscription: alongside handsets it holds SIM cards, mobile phone software and, in the fixed class, pre-pay vouchers and calling cards.[^gpc]

Signage is the one node here that publication 286 does define, as signs collectively, especially commercial or public display signs, or accessories for signs, to enable public written or verbal communication that broadcasts announcements to inform, warn or protect.[^gpc] That definition is what places printed and unprinted signs and sign holders in a communications segment rather than an office or building one. The segment is drawn around the device and the medium rather than the message, which is why neighbouring equipment falls outside it: a pre-recorded music CD, for example, is classified by its physical medium under Audio Visual/Photography (68000000), not here and not under Music (61000000).[^gpc] GPC is republished twice a year, in May and November, and users are given six months to move their systems to a new version.[^nutshell]
