## About <!--about-->
Music is one of the top-level segments of the GS1 Global Product Classification, the scheme this site uses to file a product by what it is. It sits at the root of the hierarchy, with no parent above it. Despite the name, the segment covers the making of music rather than recordings of it: musical instruments, the accessories that go with them, and packs combining the two.[^gpc]

The segment holds a single family, Musical Instruments/Accessories, which divides into four classes. Musical Instruments (Non Powered) has six bricks, for brasswind, keyboards and pianos, percussion, string and woodwind instruments, taking in trumpets, cornets, French horns, trombones and tubas, violins, cellos, harps, banjos and mandolins, and cymbals, drums, triangles, tambourines and bells. Musical Instruments (Powered) has seven, mirroring those families for electric instruments such as electric pianos and organs, electric guitars, powered drum sets and electric trumpets, and adding powered instrument aids. Musical Instrument Accessories is the largest class, with twelve bricks covering mouthpieces, mutes, reeds, ligatures, strings, picks and slides, drum sticks, pedals and heads, keyboard amplifiers and footswitch pedals, cases, bags and covers, stands, holders and lyres, instrument cleaning products, and metronomes and tuners in both powered and non-powered form. Musical Instruments/Accessories Variety Packs holds mixed assortments that span different bricks of the same class.[^gpc]

Twenty-six bricks sit beneath those classes, and an individual product is filed at brick level. In this branch the descriptive text sits at brick level too: every one of the twenty-six carries both a definition and a list of exclusions, while this segment, its family and its four classes carry none. None is therefore reproduced here, and the description above is drawn from the titles and brick definitions below the node. Recorded music is classified elsewhere in the scheme: a pre-recorded music CD belongs to the brick CD/MD - Pre-recorded, which sits under the Audio Visual/Photography segment rather than this one.[^gpc]
