## About <!--about-->
Lighting is one of the top-level segments of the GS1 Global Product Classification, the scheme this site uses to file a product by what it is. It sits at the root of the hierarchy, with no parent above it, and gathers the things that make artificial light: the lamps and bulbs themselves, the fittings and fixtures that hold them, the components that switch and dim them, portable lights, and the shades, stands and spare parts that go with them.[^gpc]

The segment holds a single family, also called Lighting, which divides into five classes. Lamps/Light Bulbs/Lighting is much the largest, covering light bulbs, tubes and light-emitting diodes, LED strips, fibre optic and rope or string lights, and fixtures grouped by how they are installed: built-in, mounted, hanging, plug-in, freestanding, undercabinet and mirror, together with wide-angle and high-beam work lighting. Lighting Control Components covers ballasts and starters, light sockets and dimmers. Torches/Lanterns/Flashlights separates powered from non-powered. Lighting - Replacement Parts/Accessories covers lampshades, lampstands and bases, brackets and fittings, light bulb changers and lighting tripods. Lighting - Other is the catch-all for products that fit none of the rest.[^gpc]

Twenty-three bricks sit beneath those classes, and an individual product is filed at brick level. In this part of the classification the descriptive text sits at that level too: a brick such as Light Bulbs/Tubes/Light-Emitting Diodes carries both a definition and a list of exclusions, while this segment, its family and all five of its classes carry no definition or exclusion text at all. None is therefore reproduced here, and the description above is drawn from the titles of the classes and bricks that sit beneath this node.[^gpc]
