Olay, formerly Oil of Olay, is a skin-care brand started in 1952 in Durban, South Africa, by the chemist Graham Wulff, who named it as a play on lanolin.[^wikiolay] Richardson Merrell (later Richardson-Vicks) bought Wulff's company in 1970, and Procter & Gamble acquired Richardson-Vicks, and the brand with it, in 1985.[^wikiolay] Early export markets sold it as Oil of Ulay in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Oil of Ulan in Australia and Oil of Olaz in France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands; in 1999 P&G unified the name as Olay, keeping Olaz in German-speaking countries, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, and German-speaking markets moved to Olay in 2020.[^wikiolay] The range spans facial creams, cleansers, soap and body wash, and Olay became P&G's 13th billion-dollar brand in 2013.[^wikiolay]
