Maybelline, signed on its packs as Maybelline New York, is an American cosmetics brand founded in Chicago in 1915 by pharmacist Thomas Lyle Williams, who turned the Vaseline and coal-dust mixture his sister Mabel used on her lashes into a product sold as Lash-Brow-Ine.[^wikipedia] It has been a subsidiary of L'Oréal since 1996 and is based in New York City.[^wikipedia]

Williams sold the company to Plough Inc. (later Schering-Plough) in Memphis in 1967; production moved from Chicago to Memphis, and in 1975 the company moved to Little Rock, Arkansas.[^wikipedia] Schering-Plough sold Maybelline to the New York investment firm Wasserstein Perella & Co. in 1990, and after L'Oréal's acquisition in 1996 the headquarters moved to New York City, followed by the factory to Brooklyn in 2000.[^wikipedia]
