Rubin founded it as Def American Recordings after leaving Def Jam Recordings in 1988 and renamed it American Recordings in 1993; its roster has included Slayer, the Black Crowes, Danzig, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty and System of a Down. Its distribution has passed over the years between Geffen, Warner Bros.
