About Lipton Teas and Infusions
Lipton Teas and Infusions B.V. is an Amsterdam company that makes tea and herbal drinks and describes itself as the largest tea business in the world, holding more than thirty brands including Lipton, PG Tips, Pukka, TAZO, T2, Brooke Bond and Bushells.[1] It was Unilever's global tea business, run as the separate business Ekaterra, until CVC Capital Partners Fund VIII agreed in November 2021 to buy it for €4.5 billion on a cash-free, debt-free basis,[2] a sale Unilever completed on 1 July 2022, after which the business took its present name.[3][1] Unilever kept its tea business in India, Nepal and Indonesia and its interests in the Pepsi Lipton ready-to-drink tea joint ventures, so those are outside this company.[3]
When the sale was agreed, CVC described Ekaterra as the world's leading tea business, with 34 brands and revenues of around €2 billion in 2020.[2] The Lipton name goes back to Sir Thomas Lipton's grocery business, started in the United Kingdom in 1871; Unilever acquired the Lipton tea business in several transactions between 1938 and 1972.[1] A month after the sale to CVC, the company announced its withdrawal from the Russian market. It launched the Lipton Tea Innovation & Technology Academy with the Government of Kenya and the University of Kabianga in February 2024, and in May 2024 agreed to sell its tea estates in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda to Browns Investments.[1]
