About

Norwegian canning company, one of the country's leading canneries at the turn of the twentieth century, which in 1902 received "special royal permission" from Oscar II to use the king's name and likeness on a line of sardine products, creating the King Oscar brand.[1] It began exporting King Oscar sardines to the United States in 1903, produced the first Norwegian commercial, a ten-minute film called "Sardine fishing", in 1909 to market the brand, and used the slogan "Out to conquer the world".[1] In 1981 eleven Norwegian canneries merged into Norway Foods, which took over the King Oscar brand.[1]
