About

Brouwerij Mort Subite, formerly Brouwerij De Keersmaeker, is a lambic brewery at Lierput 1 in Kobbegem, part of Asse in Flemish Brabant.^[1] A first mention of the farm brewery dates from 1604 and its first recorded brewer, Joris Van Der Hasselt, from 1686, the year the brewery still dates itself from; Felix Jan De Keersmaeker took it over in 1869 and the family ran it for a century.^[2][3] Lambic, gueuze and fruit beers under the Mort Subite name have been its main products since it took over the Brussels gueuze blendery A la Mort Subite in 1970, and it remains a member of HORAL, the high council for artisanal lambic beers.^[2] The Huis van de Geuze visitor centre sets out the same family history in detail.^[4]

Paul De Keersmaeker sold his half of the brewery to the Alken-Maes group in 1989; Alken-Maes bought André De Keersmaeker's remaining shares in 2000, and the group has belonged to Heineken since 2008.^[2] The municipality of Asse still lists the brewery at Lierput 1 and routes enquiries to Alken-Maes.^[1] No source found names the licensee of GS1 company prefix 5411656, so it is recorded here as inferred rather than stated: all 22 Open Food Facts records in that block are Mort Subite lambics,^[5] while the group's own pilsners and Grimbergen sit under the separate prefix 5410263,^[6] which points at the Kobbegem brewery rather than at Alken-Maes. Searched without result on 14 September 2026: Verified by GS1 and GEPIR, which publish nothing for Belgium since GS1 BeLux retired GEPIR at the end of 2023; the GLEIF register, which holds no LEI record matching the brewery; the brewery's own site, which names no barcode registrant; and a web search on the bare prefix digits.
