Alberto-Culver was the American hair and skin care company at 2525 Armitage Avenue, Melrose Park, Illinois, behind Alberto VO5, TRESemme, St. Ives, Nexxus, Noxzema, FDS, Consort and White Rain and the ethnic hair care marks Soft & Beautiful, Just For Me, Motions and TCB.[1] Unilever agreed to buy it on 27 September 2010, and the merger closed on 10 May 2011, when ACE Merger, Inc. merged into Alberto-Culver Company and the company survived as a wholly owned subsidiary of Conopco, Inc., Unilever's American holding company, and so as an indirect Unilever subsidiary.[2] Until then it was a listed company with no owner above it: the New York Stock Exchange removed its common stock, Commission file 1-32970 and ISIN US0130781000, on 11 May 2011.[3][4]

The business began as a Los Angeles beauty supply house founded by Blaine Culver and named after its house chemist, Alberto; Leonard H. Lavin bought and reorganised it in 1955 for US$400,000, moved it to Chicago and cut the range back to Alberto VO5 shampoo and hairdressing, which led its category by 1958.[1] Two legal entities carry that history. The company that filed with the SEC as ALBERTO CULVER CO, CIK 0000003327 and EIN 36-2257936, deregistered with a Form 15 on 28 November 2006 when shareholders spun off the Sally Beauty distribution business, and stands on EDGAR today as New Alberto-Culver LLC.[5][1] The entity Unilever bought is the Delaware corporation incorporated as New Aristotle Holdings, Inc., which took the name Alberto-Culver Company on 29 November 2006 and files as CIK 0001368457, EIN 20-5196741.[6][2] It bought the salon hair care company Nexxus in 2005 and the worldwide Noxzema rights from Procter & Gamble in October 2008; in December 2009 it bought Simple Health & Beauty Group Limited and with it the Simple skincare brand, which Unilever took over about six months after the purchase.[1][7] Antitrust conditions on the Unilever deal sent the American rights to VO5, Rave and Coast to High Ridge Brands, and the former Alberto Culver plant closed in 2013.[1]

The company keeps no website of its own: alberto.com, the address Wikidata still records as its official site, now redirects to unilever.com, where the brands are presented.[8][4]
